Key points from IRAS
- Singapore has no capital gains tax. Gains from disposing of tokens held as a long-term investment are not taxed.
- Businesses that buy and sell tokens in the ordinary course of business are taxed on the trading profit. Mining and trading for money is also taxable.
- Whether a gain is trading or capital depends on the facts, including purpose, how often you trade and how long you hold.
- IRAS treats a payment token as intangible property. Paying for goods or services with one is treated as barter, valued at the time of the transaction.
- Businesses paid in tokens record the sale at the open market value of the goods or services in Singapore dollars.
