Best VPN for crypto in New Zealand (2026)
What NZ agencies actually say about VPNs and public Wi-Fi
- Netsafe lists a VPN as extra protection for logins on Wi-Fi hotspots and for hiding your IP address, and notes mobile data is generally more secure than hotspots.
- Netsafe also warns a VPN does not protect against viruses or malware, does not fully stop tracking, and means trusting the provider, which can potentially see what you do online. It cautions that free VPNs can carry malware risk.
- Netsafe's checklist for choosing one: security, the provider's location, how much personal data and metadata it collects, and its policy on sharing records with law enforcement.
- Own Your Online (the NZ government's cyber security guidance) says to avoid online shopping and internet banking on free public Wi-Fi, and to set up two-factor authentication.
For crypto, that means: don't log into an exchange or sign wallet transactions on café, airport or library Wi-Fi without at least a VPN, and preferably use your phone's mobile data instead.

The bigger NZ risk: crypto scams
The Financial Markets Authority (FMA) has published repeated warnings to New Zealanders about:
- Fake crypto investment platforms promoted on social media, which refuse withdrawals and then demand "taxes" or "withdrawal fees" that never release funds.
- Recovery scams that target past victims with claims that lost funds have been recovered, again for an upfront payment.
- "Alternative financial system" and crypto-storage scams that ask for your seed phrase or private keys. The FMA's advice: never disclose them.
No VPN stops any of these. If you think you've been scammed, the FMA says to stop contact, call your bank or exchange immediately, and report it to the FMA; Netsafe is on 0508 638 723.
NZ checklist
- Prefer mobile data over public Wi-Fi for anything crypto.
- Turn on 2FA on every exchange account.
- Treat any no-logs claim as a promise unless there's a published independent audit.
- Never use a VPN to get around an exchange's country rules or KYC; accounts can be frozen.
- Keep coins you hold long-term on a hardware wallet: see hardware wallets for Australia & NZ.
- Sorting your IRD return? See our Koinly NZ review.
